Built with the vision of telling our stories with the Harbour as a focal point, this Museum has been created over the last five years with a huge input from our community. It will continue to evolve and develop as our stories continue to be told.
We envisage it will always need the dedicated input of community volunteers, and the tasks and skills needed are many and varied.
f you would like to find out more about becoming a volunteer, call in and talk to us.
The project to build the new museum at Mangawhai was first mooted in the year 2000, by the Mangawhai Historical Society, and in 2006 the one hectare site at Thelma Road was granted by the Kaipara District Council for lease by the Mangawhai Historical Society.
Then followed a further three years of fund raising before the site was blessed in 2009 by the local Iwi, Te- Uri-o-Hau and Ngati Manuhiri, when the first sod was turned and Resource Consent granted.
A year later the site was again blessed as the foundations were laid and precious items buried beneath the concrete by our local Iwi and descendants of our early settlers.
Since 2009, this distinctive building has progressed in steady stages, with generous donations from local contractors and volunteers and generous grants from community members and other organisations, including the ASB Community Trust, the Lotteries Commission, and Pub Charities and the Mangawhai Endowment Fund.
