The Fairy Tern has been on the brink of extinction since the 1970s and the Dotterel’s numbers are low. Big efforts are being made to save them.
Mangawhai Museum celebrates life round our harbour from building ships to building sandcastles. It also tells of the an epic battle of the Maori wars, lost bullion still waiting to be found from the second world war, secret gatherings of heavy machinery to defy government regulators. In all there are eleven different stories including the very up-to-date story of the struggle to save the critically endangered Fairy Tern.
The displays have been years in the making and will offer a trip down memory lane for some of the oldies and for those not so old a chance to wonder at the stories of yesteryear in a visually entertaining way.
